Originally known as the Scarborough Housing Help Centre (SHHC), our organization began in 1985 as a joint initiative between Catholic Cross-Cultural Services (CCS) and the Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA) to provide a room registry for single people. Over the next several years, the program began offering housing help services to a broader scope of clients, including seniors, families and couples.
In 2001, SHHC was incorporated as a non-profit and moved to its present location at 2500 Lawrence Avenue East. In 2003, SHHC received charitable status and became a member agency of the United Way of York Region in 2011.
SHHC started serving clients in York Region in 2012, and received funding in 2013 to target low and middle-class families in York Region.
We changed our name to The Housing Help Centre in 2014 to reflect the fact that our service footprint had grown beyond Scarborough to other parts of the Greater Toronto Area. In 2015, we received Bhayana Family Foundation Award from the United Way of Toronto and York Region in recognition of our efforts.
